MVBC Lights up the Holidays!

Courtesy of KVIA

After the recent death of Ricardo Duarte, the Mesilla Valley Bike Coalition held a fundraiser to purchase bicycle lights for the Community of Hope in Las Cruces. This past Saturday, coalition members were on hand distributing lights to those in need. Hopefully this will become an annual event and minimize the possibilities of another tragic incident from occurring. We to go MVBC!

Costumed Halloween Ride

We will be riding around in our costumes for Halloween this Sunday. We are going to be meeting up 8pm at the Rio Grande Theater in Downtown LC and ride towards Mesilla Park with the goal of cruising that neighborhood and scaring some kids. Just joking, maybe just scare them with our costumes :) . Please join us and invite people, the more the merrier. We will be cruising slow (really this time) because of costumes, so any one on any bike is welcome. We might end up at an establishment like High Desert but not til after we return to the Downtown area.

I’m glad the family will have an opportunity for closure.

Commuters in the News

It is always a plus when the local newspaper runs a story about commuters. The article is about three White Sands Missile Range employees who’s commute could possibly be the most difficult in the area. If these guys can ride to work, then we should all ride to work or school or where ever you need to be…

South Solano Road Diet a Go!

Solano Road Diet

Local ride heading south on Solano

Congratulations Las Cruces, you are one step closer to what you CAN be.

Despite some resistance, the south Solano micro-resurfacing and Road Diet will continue as planned. A big THANKS to the City Council, especially Councilwoman Connor; Mayor Miyagishima, and City Manager Moore for their continual support of this progressive community.

Last but not least, a much BIGGER THANKS to Mike Johnson, Dan Soriano, Caeri Thomas and of course Andy Hume. Without their efforts, Las Cruces bicycle facilities would be a fraction of what they are now!

No word yet on the expected completion date but we will keep you posted.

Public Transit ridership down

As the city of Las Cruces grows, bus ridership has declined.  I suspect the reduction of the budget and the general attitude towards public transportion.  It’s similar to the citys approach to bicycle facilities… the low numbers from studies are given as reasons why progressive urban ideas are not implemented…

Save the Bike Lanes!

A very small minority of our City of LC Council persons (Councilor Dolores Connor) have objections to the planned (planned, reviewed, accepted) restriping for Solano from Missourri to University Ave when they refinish that section. The MPO and City came by the money partially because of their TIP proposal which called for a road diet the same as the striping on Solano from Lohman to Missourri. The continuation of the road diet and bike lanes from Missourri to University Ave will make the section of road diet from Lohman to Missourri less isolated and more useful. Many of us were amazed at the attmept of the Solano Road diet because it seemed unplanned and seemed to be an island of bike lanes.

From a local commenter to the City Council (local cyclist advocate-well keep anonymous):
