Sad News

Suspected vehicle type: White Minivan

Another sad day my friends. A 58 year old male was struck down at 11pm while riding his bicycle on Valley drive between Lohman and Hadley. The culprit left the scene leaving the helpless man bleeding on the side of the road. He died later in the hospital.

One thing we can do is to encourage City Council to consider proper education for not only bicyclist but for the entire community. People have to understand that we also have the right to the road AND more importantly, we are human beings!

Commuters in the News

It is always a plus when the local newspaper runs a story about commuters. The article is about three White Sands Missile Range employees who’s commute could possibly be the most difficult in the area. If these guys can ride to work, then we should all ride to work or school or where ever you need to be…

South Solano Road Diet a Go!

Solano Road Diet

Local ride heading south on Solano

Congratulations Las Cruces, you are one step closer to what you CAN be.

Despite some resistance, the south Solano micro-resurfacing and Road Diet will continue as planned. A big THANKS to the City Council, especially Councilwoman Connor; Mayor Miyagishima, and City Manager Moore for their continual support of this progressive community.

Last but not least, a much BIGGER THANKS to Mike Johnson, Dan Soriano, Caeri Thomas and of course Andy Hume. Without their efforts, Las Cruces bicycle facilities would be a fraction of what they are now!

No word yet on the expected completion date but we will keep you posted.

16 de Septiembre Alleycat!

Only one way to celebrate Mexico’s Independence… with a ALLEYCAT and BeeR!

Join us this Thursday for a friendly yet competitive ride around the City of Lost Causes. The route will be “free for all” but competitors must go from checkpoint to checkpoint in order. Supporters at checkpoints may supply bottles of water and beers. Riders may be asked to drink a beverage of choice and/or have their card punched before continuing to the next checkpoint. You must pick up a spoke card at the first checkpoint and will need to present your spoke card to the volunteer present at each checkpoint. First one to complete each checkpoint and arrive at the Finish wins. There will be a skid comp for those there fastest!

Note* Since this is a free for all, non-sanctioned, totally for fun event, everyone will be riding at their own risk. With that in mind, bring your lights and helmets and Ride Safe! Every man (and woman) for themselves!

Checkpoint list

  1. Start Dublin’s Street Pub – Meet here at 8pm. Ride will start 8:15 sharp
  2. The Game Bar and Grill – Drink (or chug) a drink (beer or water or whatever) and pick up your spoke card
  3. Front of the Rio Grande Theater Downtown – spoke card punched
  4. NE corner of Apodaca Park near the Baseball Field – Chug a beer or water and get card punched
  5. Young Park gazebo – Chug a beer or water and get card signed
  6. Back to Dublin’s Street Pub Finish in Front

Checkpoint Map

After Party!!

After everyone is accounted for, follow us to The Game for drinks and a little of that old-school social networking.

Public Transit ridership down

As the city of Las Cruces grows, bus ridership has declined.  I suspect the reduction of the budget and the general attitude towards public transportion.  It’s similar to the citys approach to bicycle facilities… the low numbers from studies are given as reasons why progressive urban ideas are not implemented…

Save the Bike Lanes!

A very small minority of our City of LC Council persons (Councilor Dolores Connor) have objections to the planned (planned, reviewed, accepted) restriping for Solano from Missourri to University Ave when they refinish that section. The MPO and City came by the money partially because of their TIP proposal which called for a road diet the same as the striping on Solano from Lohman to Missourri. The continuation of the road diet and bike lanes from Missourri to University Ave will make the section of road diet from Lohman to Missourri less isolated and more useful. Many of us were amazed at the attmept of the Solano Road diet because it seemed unplanned and seemed to be an island of bike lanes.

From a local commenter to the City Council (local cyclist advocate-well keep anonymous):
