Abq cyclists SEEN
With more than 200 cyclists riding together on Central and other major streets in Albuquerque Sunday, Albuquerque drivers are hopefully more aware that we need to be SEEN. BikeABQ’s Can You See Us NOW? ride was a major success and it received major media attention.

Gustavo Vega Memorial Ride
This Saturday Sept. 12th there will be a memorial ride for Gus. Any one with a bicycle please come out and support his family. Let’s show the city of El Paso and surrounding communities that we cyclist stand united.
The ride will be leaving Dick Shinaut Park on Saul Klienfeld at 9 am. It will then head down Pebble Hills to Eastwood Park, formerly Album Park. Once at Eastwood Park everyone will regroup and ride back to Dick Shinaut Park. It’s a 9 mile loop. Belen will be waiting with goodies and after ride drinks. The media will be present, so it’s very important that we let El Paso know we’re out there. Thank you to everyone ahead of time, and be careful.
Unsung Hero

We At Urban Aggression would like to congratulate Senior Las Cruces City Planner Mr. Andy Hume for receiving the Unsung Hero Community Champion Award. Molina Healthcare of New Mexico recently recognized his efforts in implementing the Safe Routes To School program, which provides better bicycle infrastructure and education for schools, providing children a safe & healthy alternative way to get to school.
Mr. Hume is a planner for the local Metropolitan Planning Organization (MPO) and has been the crucial link between the community and the powers-to-be. He helps communicate ideas and concerns with city council as-well-as works to secure funds for future bicycle facilities. Mr. Hume has set a goal for the City of Las Cruces to become a recognized Bicycle Friendly Community by the League of American Bicyclist. A formidable task we know he can accomplish. We hope more of Andy’s hard work pays off in the near future. Bureaucracy and funding have proven formidable opponents to real on the ground improvements in facilities but we know with support from local cyclists, he can help this city get moving in a healthier direction.
Andy can also be found out-and-about at the various local events riding his bicycle. Congrats again and thanks for all your help!
We didn’t Start the Fire!
With the weather cooling down and NMSU back into full swing, unwelcomed confrontations between cyclists and motorists are sure to increase. Unfortunately, public sympathy is hardly on the side of the bicyclist. This is evident in the case of Anthony Lemieux, who was killed while riding on the correct side of a designated bicycle facility. The perpetrator, 23-year-old Stephanie Parra-Perez, was never investigated nor fined. No investigation into whether she was on the phone or texting at the time of the incident was ever conducted. In other words, she got away with murder.
In our auto-centric society, cyclists in general are view as second class citizens who are not entitled to utilizing the roads. A completely false sentiment that is deplorably shared by many in the law enforcement community, as I have witnessed. Sorry folks, all those expensive bicycles dangling on the back of squad cars (that tax payer money purchased) are hardly used… and it’s pathetic when they do! I have witnessed trained bicycling officers of the law riding on the sidewalk on the wrong side of the road which is most dangerous, illegal, and sets a very bad example. If you ever see a Las Cruces city bicycling officer at night, note that they don’t use their legally required lights, another terrible example for them to set.
Since a very minute percentage of society ever ride their bikes past the end of the street, coupled with ideals mentioned above; bicycle-automobile collisions have become a very hot topic. On most occasions, fault is automatically attributed to the cyclists. Tragically, many will never be able to tell their side of the story, as in Mr. Lemieux’s case. Read the Las Cruces Sun News article of this incident for an excellent example of backwards finger pointing.
Now, a report published by the University of Toronto’s Dr. Chris Cavacuiti of the department of family and community medicine and staff physician at St. Michael’s Hospital states otherwise. His research suggested that 9 out of 10 collisions are cause by the driver.
The most common type of crash in this study involved a motorist entering an intersection and either failing to stop properly or proceeding before it was safe to do so. The second most common crash type involved a motorist overtaking unsafely. The third involved a motorist opening a door onto an oncoming cyclist. The study concluded that cyclists are the cause of less than 10 per cent of bike-car accidents in this study.
This study does coincide with my feelings about bicycle-auto collisions, as we are at a massive disadvantage going up against a two-ton hunk of steel. What does Dr. Cavacuiti recommend? Better trained enforcement and public education, similar to whats seen in many European countries. I would also like to see our local law enforcement receive extensive training on the matter and for the civic leaders to appreciated what better cycling infrastructure can do to our community.

Lets go Las Cruces!
Thanks to efforts from NMDOT, Las Cruces and El Paso, the pilot program for a bus commuter line between the two cities will begin August 31st. Another line will cover the 25 miles to White Sands Missle Range.
One-way tickets will be only $3 and pick up points include downtown Las Cruces, NMSU, Anthony and downtown El Paso. Even thought the program only runs durning the weekdays and within a three hour window during the morning and evening hours, it is a start. Hopefully the foundation for improving regional transit systems.
With this new connection, anyone can load their bike in downtown or NMSU and meet up with buddies anymore in EP!

Cyclists pressure NM officials for safer streets

LOS ALAMOS, N.M. (AP) — Concerned bicyclists say their safety is being forgotten as New Mexico plans new highways and maintains thousands of miles of existing traffic lanes.
It’s a concern that’s cropping up across the nation as more people demand alternative ways to get to work, school and the corner store to avoid high gasoline prices and cut emissions.
With billions of dollars being spent each year on transportation projects nationwide, cyclists are pressuring politicians to adopt “complete streets” policies that ease dangers and accommodate all modes of transportation.
“We have a long history in this country of building a lot of really great roads for automobiles, and now I think we’re at a point where everybody would like to see more multi-modal transportation networks that really provide for everyone,” said Barbara McCann, executive director of the National Complete Streets Coalition in Washington, D.C.
The Bicycle Coalition of New Mexico and other groups have asked Gov. Bill Richardson to change state paving policies and maintain safer shoulders along New Mexico’s roadways.
Coalitions in Connecticut, Indiana, Kansas, Michigan and Missouri also are pushing transportation officials to make things safer for cyclists.
“Unfortunately, with the way things are, to be a bike commuter you sort of start into it with this attitude of I’m going to do it despite all of these things,” said Neale Pickett, a self-described computer nerd who rides his bike to work at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.
Pickett, a licensed cycling instructor, said the lack of facilities creates fear among non-motorized commuters.
“You might have to deal with situations that will require a little more thought or bravado,” he said.
The Complete Streets Coalition has documented the dangers with photographs showing cyclists riding on streets with no room, people dashing across major roads with no crosswalks, and commuters getting off the bus in places where the bus stop is just a pole in the grass.
McCann said there’s a misconception that if states want to have facilities for biking, walking and public transit, they need to come up with some special pot of new money and build a separate system.
“We already are spending billions on transportation, and there is no reason we should be building roadways that turn out to be barriers to these other modes of transportation,” she said.
New Mexico Deputy Transportation Secretary Max Valerio said the cost of projects and competing interests make highway planning difficult.
“It’s a real delicate issue where we have to balance the needs and interests of the motor vehicles, pedestrians, bicyclists and transit, and it’s not as easy as one size fits all,” he said.
The department is willing to meet with the bicycle coalition and others to talk about possible solutions, Valerio said.
Pickett considers himself lucky because Los Alamos County has its own comprehensive bike plan, and a small army of construction workers is preparing the main road in Los Alamos for bike lanes that will help lab scientists and others get around town.
New Mexico’s largest cities also have improved their bicycle facilities in recent years, but the state is still ranked near the bottom by the League of American Bicyclists when it comes to being bike-friendly.
Oregon is near the top of that list. In Portland, building a transportation network for things others than cars has been a priority since the 1970s.
“We had the elected leadership who were understanding enough that freeways weren’t some sort of magic cure all to all of our problems,” said Jonathan Maus, who runs the advocacy Web site BikePortland.org.
Maus said most transportation departments are focused on building highways and widening roads for cars.
“It’s difficult for them to start to see the world in a different way that doesn’t include motorized vehicles,” he said.
In New Mexico, cyclists complain that many roads lack shoulders and some have been rendered useless because of paving methods that leave a lip along the shoulder.
One wrong move and a rider could be bucked into traffic, said Jim Harrington, a cyclist who led a push in Santa Fe against the paving practice.
Valerio said the state adds a layer of special paving to roads to prevent vehicles from hydroplaning in wet conditions, and that type of pavement isn’t needed on the shoulders. It would cost an extra $40,000 a mile to add the pavement to an interstate shoulder, he said.
Some of the federal stimulus money is earmarked for projects such as bike lanes, but Valerio said that funding won’t meet all of New Mexico’s needs.

Brews and Cruise
You are invited to “brews and cruise” with us this Friday night August 7th. We will be going on a scenic ride around the edge of town with a few chances to drink a beer along the way. The ride promises to be slow and fun with chances for beers but no excessive drinking.
The plan is to meet at Dublins pub on University at 8:30pm for a beer inside or chat outside, leave by 9.

One step closer to Complete Streets!
All of us that hate how poorly designed our area commuters lanes and bike paths are can now rejoice! On Monday June 15th, the Las Cruces City Council adopted Resolution #09-301 which is the Complete Streets Guiding Principles “so that transportation improvements are planned, funded, designed, constructed, operated, and maintained to integrate walking, bicycling, transit, and motor vehicle use while promoting safe and efficient operations for all users.”
The County Government is now up next to incorporated these guidelines. The issue will go before the Board of Commissioners sometime in the near future. Thanks to Andy Hume from the city’s planning department for all his efforts and assistance to the local cycling community.
